Acupuncture may help reduce arm circumference in women with breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL), according to an American pilot study. Thirty-three women with BCRL, with affected arm circumference more then two centimetres larger than unaffected arm, received acupuncture twice weekly for four weeks. At end-of-treatment, the mean reduction in arm circumference difference was found to be 0.90 cm. Following acupuncture treatment, eleven patients (33%) exhibited a positive treatment response, defined as a reduction of more than 30% circumference difference between affected and unaffected arms. No serious adverse events, infections or exacerbations were reported over a total of 255 treatment sessions and six months of follow-up.
